The More Things Change ~ Reflections from #BIT14

"Excuses change nothing, but make everyone feel better" ~ Mason Cooley   I started the title for this blog with a partial quote "The more things change..." because of what I have experienced with the use of technology in the classroom over my career. The technology has changed dramatically, but not so much how it is used and who is using it. For the second year in a row I was honoured to present at the Bring IT Together conference in Niagara Falls. This year I presented with my good friend @sbruyns on being a connected administrator. Although I thought our session went very well I left the conference with a sense of emptiness.  The sessions I attended were valuable and the keynotes were excellent. What really struck me though was something that Ron Canuel  talked about during his Friday morning keynote. The idea that it's always the same faces,...

Another EdCamp, Another A+

"The smartest person in the room, is the room." ~ David Weinberger   This past weekend I attended my third EdCamp and it was another A+ experience. Every EdCamp that I've been to has had different strengths and takeaways that have moved my learning forward. EdCamp Waterloo was no different. Below is a reflection of my day in Waterloo and what I learned. It's always great to share a day of learning with friends. Saturday was no exception as a number of the EdCamp London organizing committee decided to make the hour long drive to Waterloo, not just for the day of learning but to gather more information and ideas for our own EdCamp which will be held in April.  It's also great to make personal connections with those in your PLN. The first person from my PLN that I saw and had a great conversation with was Mark...

5 to Follow

I've read a few "5 to Follow" posts lately. They have been posts about five Twitter users to follow with the writer's reasons why you should. You could think of the posts as the popular #followfriday hashtag used by many Twitter users but with a much more detailed description of why someone should follow that person. Following along with the 5 to Follow idea I thought I would create a similar post, but about 5 blogs to follow. I follow a number of different educational blogs using Feedly as my blog aggregator in a number of different areas like leadership, edtech and classroom teaching. Below are 5 blogs that I enjoy reading and I'm sure you will too! Click each graphic to get to the blog.       If you are interested in educational technology and leadership then Scott McLeod's blog is a must read. In his dangerously!...

4 Reasons Why You Need to Be a Connected Educator

"A tribe is a group of people connected to one another, connected to a leader, and connected to an idea. For millions of years, human beings have been part of one tribe or another. A group needs only two things to be a tribe: a shared interest and a way to communicate." ~ Seth Godin   Last week I attended EdCamp Leadership in New Jersey held in the beautiful (but cold!) STEM Building at Kean University. It was the second EdCamp that I've attended and it didn't disappoint. I attended sessions on BYOD and Branding with Eric Sheninger and a session about what teachers really want in back-to-school PD with Joe Mazza. But the session that really got me thinking was with Tom Whitby on the importance of being a Connected Educator. The discussion led by the passionate Tom Whitby and my own thoughts on being a Connected Educator led...
